I never wanted to drink or even look at a box of Franzia until a few years ago. It
wasn’t until my best friend, Ted, opened my eyes to the diverse world of boxed wines. They are easily (and cheaply) found in most liquor and grocery stores. One may purchase these delightful little treats in two sizes: the “party” box or the personal box. The “party” box is the larger packaging that most consumers are aware of. The newer, marketing offspring of the “party” box is the personal box. A simple, hand held box of wine (without bladder) that could make any red-neck relatively classier. I have to admit, I have tasted both items and feel that the personal box falls much lower in taste and full effect than its larger and more eager brother, the “party” box.
Another great aspect of either forms of boxed wine is the ability to reseal the container for freshness. Most boxed wines include some derivation of chardonnay, blush and zinfandel. With the right care these wines could last a few weekends in your refrigerator.
Just as well, the nifty little spout on the bottom of the box provides all too easy access and pouring capabilities. It is even acceptable, in certain circles, to use plastic cups when dispensing this particular wine. No more broken bottles or Riedel glasses during a Big Ten tailgate.
So, next time you are debating which full-bodied, tasty wine to purchase; don’t overlook the box of Franzia on the floor of Safeway. It just might surprise you.
Boxed wine to me is like Gerber is to babies. I started out with them, but I don’t think I’ll ever go back. Yeah, that sounds really snotty, but I can’t help it. However, if that was the only wine offered at a party and I was crazy enough not to bring some bottled wine, you can bet I’d be mooching off of the Franzia.
Just bought my first box of Franzia today, the Shiraz. A couple of weeks ago I bought a box of OZ, from South Australia. It was really great, a full Australian Shiraz. So I am very curious to see whether this 5L party box actually tastes like an ok Shiraz. Any experiences out there?
